Making thoughtful requests
Seven sentences to ask for help or an explanation while respecting the other person’s time.
Beginner · One practice about 3 min · Created by GameTalk · Edited
When to use this
You want a friend to check a sentence. Ask whether they have time, then explain one specific thing you need help with.
Read a sentence aloud and check its meaning. Instead of memorising everything at once, choose one sentence for today’s conversation and change the name or situation to fit your own experience.
How to practise
Read each sentence slowly. Check its meaning, then say it again without looking at the translation. Finally, add one sentence about your own situation.
1 / 7
Would now be a good time for a quick chat?
Check availability before explaining your request. Wait for an answer.
2 / 7
If you have a moment, could you explain that once more?
Use this when you need an explanation repeated. Identify the part that was unclear.

I would appreciate it if you could tell me what I missed.
Be specific about what you missed, such as the last sentence.

Could you check whether this sentence sounds natural?
Show the sentence you want checked. Start with one short request rather than a whole long text.

Please feel free to reply whenever it is convenient for you.
Use this when a reply is not urgent and you really can wait.

Please let me know if that is difficult. I can look for another way.
Leave room for the other person to decline. Be ready to use another method.

A short example conversation
Common mistakes and tips
- Saying there is no rush while demanding an immediate reply sends mixed messages. Be honest about your timing.
- Use the base form of the verb after Could you…?: for example, Could you check…?
Try it yourself
You want one sentence checked, and the reply is not urgent. Write a request and one sentence about timing.
Show an example answer
Example: “Could you check whether this sentence sounds natural? Please feel free to reply whenever it is convenient for you.”
After your practice
Write down one expression you used for the first time. Think of another situation where it would be useful, and try using it in your next conversation.
