Meeting a new friend

Seven sentences to share your name and interests, find common ground, and arrange another conversation.

Beginner · One practice about 3 min · Created by GameTalk · Edited

When to use this

You are meeting a language-exchange partner for the first time. Introduce yourself, then ask one question so you can both take part.

Read a sentence aloud and check its meaning. Instead of memorising everything at once, choose one sentence for today’s conversation and change the name or situation to fit your own experience.

How to practise

Read each sentence slowly. Check its meaning, then say it again without looking at the translation. Finally, add one sentence about your own situation.

1 / 7

Hi. Please call me Min.

안녕하세요. 저는 민이라고 불러 주세요.

Replace Min with the name you want to use. You do not need to share your surname or address.

2 / 7

I am learning Korean right now.

저는 지금 한국어를 배우고 있어요.

Replace Korean with the language you are learning. This explains what you are working on now.

3 / 7

I like going for walks on my days off.

쉬는 날에는 산책하는 것을 좋아해요.

Replace going for walks with drawing or playing games to describe your own interests.

4 / 7

Listening to music puts me in a good mood.

음악을 들으면 기분이 좋아져요.

Connect an activity with a feeling. Say what activity puts you in a good mood.

5 / 7

What do you enjoy doing the most?

어떤 일을 할 때 가장 즐거우세요?

This invites an open answer. After listening, ask when they do that activity.

6 / 7

I like that too. We have something in common.

저도 그걸 좋아해요. 공통점이 있네요.

That refers to the interest your partner mentioned. If you do not share it, say you learned something new.

7 / 7

It was nice meeting you. Let us talk again next time.

만나서 반가웠어요. 다음에 또 이야기해요.

Use this to close the conversation. If you want to meet again, agree on a time together.

Common mistakes and tips

Try it yourself

Your partner says they like walking. Write two sentences that share an interest and keep the conversation going.

Show an example answer

Example: “I like walking too. Where do you usually go for walks?” Other answers work if they respond to your partner and ask a follow-up question.

After your practice

Write down one expression you used for the first time. Think of another situation where it would be useful, and try using it in your next conversation.
